Zooey Deschanel

I think she’s really cute, and she’s a funny actress. She plays in Elf and Yes Man…you might remember.

[interview in “In Style” magazine, 9/06] The first album I ever got was “Like a Virgin”. It was during the Iran Contra conflict-I thought she was saying, “Like a Persian”.

Always the aim for me is making people feel like they are not alone. That’s just the greatest feeling.

Kitchen Confidential

Here’s a great show I watched recently (all 13 half hour episodes). Great cast, witty dialogue, and not much else to it. See it if you like.

Ave Maria

(pictured: Olivia Hussey as Mary in Jesus of Nazareth)

This, the most famous of Marian Catholic prayers, comes from the passage in the first chapter of the gospel of Luke where the angel Gabriel is sent to tell the virgin Mary that she is blessed among women and will bear a son named Jesus. Countless musical adaptations have been written, but we are most familiar with those written by Schubert, Bach and Gounod, Caccini (well, not really…read on to find out about a musical hoax), and Mascagni.

In this post will be Youtube videos of my favorite rendition of each of the above version of Ave Maria. Read more »

Ken’s music favorites

I’m not sure if I can keep this short.

Music is really important to me.  One of my clearest memories from the FDTP was Masa, one of my mentors, saying “The essence of music is one man expressing emotion.” Don’t know why. That really went straight to my heart.

On to the list of favorites:

Genres: Celtic music. Music with ethnic instruments (Arabic flutes, Chinese violins, etc) JAZZ, some country

Composers: Michael Dooley (Michael Piano), Antonio Vivaldi (The Four Seasons), Yann Tierson (Amelie Soundtrack), 久石 譲 (Departures soundtrack) Rachel Portman (famous movie score writers

female vocalists: Florence McNair, Julie Greeneye, 平原綾香、夏川リミ、Norah Jones, Hayley Westenra, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Sissel

male vocalists: Oren Lavie, Vas Myers, David Cook and David Archuletta, Andrea Bocelli

Ken is 19

I’m 19! I’m excited as to what this new year has in store for me.

I share my birthday, December 1, with Bette Midler, Woody Allen,  and International World Aids Day.

chirashi zushi with avocado and mountain potato

Chirashi zushi is perhaps the easiest sushi there is to make. For more on how to make sushi, see the article (I wrote and won 70 dollars for…ha ha…) here

This here is a vegetarian avocado/mountain potato sushi. It’d be great with smoked salmon, shrimp, crab, etc, but we make do with what we can. Sushi rice is topped with slices of avocado and mountain potato, mayonnaise, roasted sesame seeds, and crisp nori flakes. Serve with dark soy sauce and wasabi.
